Welcome to West Derby School

Dear Parents

On behalf of the staff and pupils of West Derby School, I would like to welcome you to our website, dedicated to the community of West Derby School. Our school is a Single Academy Trust boys’ school which welcomes girls into the Sixth Form.

West Derby School endeavours to nurture the caring, trusting and strong relationships between pupils, staff and families.

The core aim of our school comes from our tireless pursuit of achieving excellence in all aspects of school life. Our values determine the way in which we pursue that goal, namely through collective cooperation, mutual respect and courtesy.

When our children feel safe, happy and optimistic about their future they are more likely to succeed. Each member of the community of West Derby School plays an important role in creating these foundations for successful lives; personally, academically and professionally.

I am proud to be the Headteacher of West Derby School. Boys come to us from over forty primary schools throughout the city because parents know their son will not only be happy and safe here, but will also achieve his very best.

I hope you find our website helpful and that it conveys our values and ethos. Please feel free to contact us if you would like to discuss any aspect of our work.

Values and Ethos

We are a popular and oversubscribed school with a very special and warm ethos. We offer a full range of academic and enrichment opportunities to all and we are very proud of our pupils’ achievements. All students are entered for an extensive range of examinations.

We want our students to be happy and successful, to be good citizens and to enjoy their years with us. Our ethos is founded upon the principles of right and wrong, and dignity and respect for all. All members of our community should be committed to these values and live up to them.

On arriving at West Derby School visitors immediately notice the calm, purposeful learning environment and the excellent relationships which are evident between students and staff. with this foundation, our students’ journey to becoming confident, independent and well-rounded adults has already begun.

It is because we are a confident community that we acknowledge that we can improve further and we will always seek strategies to work even more effectively, with all stakeholders, in this journey of continual improvement.

Thank you to all our parents who have signed up to our new Parent App – Arbor.

Some features for you to be aware of include:

By enabling ‘push notifications’ you will receive notifications on any new in-app messages we send even if you are not logged into your account.  Notifications allow you to get instant information from us.  You can also set your phone to not allow notifications at specific times of the day/night if that is preferred.

If your child is set a detention an email will be sent to you, if you are yet to do so, please let us know your email address so you receive these forms of communication.

You can use your Arbor account to inform us of any changes to your child’s information that we hold.  This information then comes through to school for us to action accordingly. Your request will show as pending in your app and once actioned by school the area that was updated will show the confirmed information.  If we need further information from you regarding any changes you request, we will contact you.

If printing your child’s timetable, it will default to show lessons only.  You can choose to include additional events such as any interventions, detentions, internal inclusions (Isolation room)

We will be sharing end of term progress updates for our KS3 pupils via your Arbor account in autumn and spring so you will have an electronic copy of the progress your child is making.

End of year reports for all our pupils will be shared via your Arbor account at the end of the summer term. Again, you will always have an electronic copy that you can access at any time.

A reminder that our current communication app, Weduc (reach More Parents) will disappear from 30/12/2024, please ensure you have logged into your Arbor account.
